چکیده

We develop a multiscale spatial kernel convolution technique with higher order functions to capture fine scale local features and lower order terms to capture large scale features. To achieve parsimony, the coefficients in the multiscale kernel convolution model is assigned a new class of “tree shrinkage prior” distributions. Tree shrinkage priors exert increasing shrinkage on the coefficients as resolution grows so as to adapt to the necessary degree of resolution at any sub-domain. Our proposed model has a number of significant features over the existing multi-scale spatial models for big data. In contrast to the existing multiscale approaches, the proposed approach autotunes the degree of resolution necessary to model a subregion in the domain, achieves scalability by suitable parallelization of local updating of parameters and is buttressed by theoretical support. Excellent empirical performances are illustrated using several simulation experiments and a geostatistical analysis of the sea surface temperature data from the Pacific ocean.

Hierarchical priors for Bayesian CART shrinkage

The Bayesian CART (classiication and regression tree) approach proposed by Chipman, George and McCulloch (1998) entails putting a prior distribution on the set of all CART models and then using stochastic search to select a model. The main thrust of this paper is to propose a new class of hierarchical priors which enhance the potential of this Bayesian approach. These priors indicate a preferen...

Prior selection for panel vector autoregressions

There is a vast literature that speci…es Bayesian shrinkage priors for vector autoregressions (VARs) of possibly large dimensions. In this paper I argue that many of these priors are not appropriate for multi-country settings, which motivates me to develop priors for panel VARs (PVARs). The parametric and semi-parametric priors I suggest not only perform valuable shrinkage in large dimensions, ...

Shrink Globally, Act Locally: Sparse Bayesian Regularization and Prediction

We study the classic problem of choosing a prior distribution for a location parameter β = (β1, . . . , βp) as p grows large. First, we study the standard “global-local shrinkage” approach, based on scale mixtures of normals. Two theorems are presented which characterize certain desirable properties of shrinkage priors for sparse problems. Next, we review some recent results showing how Lévy pr...

On a Class of Shrinkage Priors for Covariance Matrix Estimation

We propose a flexible class of models based on scale mixture of uniform distributions to construct shrinkage priors for covariance matrix estimation. This new class of priors enjoys a number of advantages over the traditional scale mixture of normal priors, including its simplicity and flexibility in characterizing the prior density. We also exhibit a simple, easy to implement Gibbs sampler for...

Local Shrinkage Rules, Lévy Processes, and Regularized Regression

We use Lévy processes to generate joint prior distributions, and therefore penalty functions, for a location parameter β = (β1, . . . ,βp) as p grows large. This generalizes the class of local-global shrinkage rules based on scale mixtures of normals, illuminates new connections among disparate methods, and leads to new results for computing posterior means and modes under a wide class of prior...
